I did a little (very little) research and came up with a few differences. Comparing the P-38J with the F7F-3, the P-38 had a slightly higher top speed at 443 vs 435 for the F7F. The P-38 had an altitude advantage at over 44,000 vs 40,500 for the F7F. Rate of climb the P-38 had a 220 ft per minute edge on the F7F. The F7F had greater hitting power with 4x20mm and 4x.50cal. guns. The P-38 was listed with a range on internal fuel as 1300 miles vs the F7F's 1200 mile.
Seems like the biggest advantage the F7F had was firepower and the ability to land on a carrier. Everything else gives the P-38 a slight advantage.
My research is by no means an absolute. I just did a quick search of the net and came up with this info. I could delve more deeply in to my library and find more.
