Anyone know if Red Tails had any actual planes, or is it all CG?

I know the Hanger 11 P-40M was used.

They used a handful of real planes based in Europe. I think it was a pair of P-40's and a pair of P-51's. Looked like alot of the background stuff was CGI or convincing mock ups. Here is more on the Hanger 11 P-40 that Nathan mentioned. www.hangar11.co.uk/kittyhawk.html

How accurate did it seem? How was the CGI?

Overall the CGI was fantastic. One of the better dogfight movies to look at recently in that regard.....but...
The movie was filled with so much Hollywood action movie fluff that there was very little truth to it. Mediocre acting, bad script and unrealistic dogfight abilities. Did you know a P51 can do a complete barrel roll on a dime? I laughed out loud at some of the maneuvers and talk during the dog fight scenes. And the "evil German" had a bad accent and a scar on his face.
It was basically Pearl Harbor - good action scenes, but the rest of the movie was bad...really bad.

I also forgot to mention a scene from the Great Escape was completely ripped of. Have fun with that.

Not surprised though.

How accurate did it seem? How was the CGI? Hello Greg, The CGI was great! Not like the Memphis Belle. Better than Pearl Harbor. The B-17's looked great! P-51's and Bf 109's also looked great! It gives a glimpse into what it was like then. They can only tell their story in a limited amount of time and it is a Hollywood version. If I wanted it 100% accurate I would watch the History Chanel or read a book on them. I went to an early showing an spent more on popcorn and a Coke than getting in! I'm going to buy it when it comes out on DVD.

Thanks guys. I'm going to watch it but will wait until it's out on DVD. While I'd like to see it be accurate as possible I understand the need to make it entertaining to the masses too.

Hollywood will usually not portray anything accurately. Stereotypes only!

I saw it. I enjoyed the ground interaction. Not much swearing which was nice. I would suppose people back then had a bit better manners for the most part. The flying wasn't the greatest and I didn't enjoy any of it. The cockpit scenes were nice though. But the graphics sucked and looked kinda like from "Dogfights". Yuke!!! I also heard some saying "if it wasn't for Red Tails, Normandy would never have happened"! Overall I enjoyed it and am just viewing it as a ww2 era movie made in the present day. Cheers, Nathan

the only connection the Tuskegee Airmen had with the invasion of France, was the August, 1944 invasion of Southern France. They had no connection whatever with the Normandy Invasion of June 6, 1944. As far as the general public is concerned, there was only 1 D-Day, and that was the Normandy operation. Forget casablanca, Sicily, Anzio, Nettuno, or Southern France, it just doesn't compute. The more I hear about this flick, the less I'm inclined to see it, even on DVD. Hal Sr
