I started a thread in the past which dealt with 'photochops'... photos and images which have been altered in some way by using Photoshop or other types of image editing software. Unfortunately my forum account was hacked and I lost all access to any old posts I'd made. So I'll just start again! Actually it was a question by Greg in another thread that inspired me to do this. I'd posted a photo, and then an altered version of same:   I really need to play around with Photoshop more. Yes, do it! It may be frustrating at first, but after you figure out some basics it's alotta fun... and when you figure out some less-than-basics it's a blast. Now, can you take off that silver paint and make her natural metal? I've never tried to 'strip paint' before, really. Not on this level, anyway. I'm sure it could be done to great effect with enough time and effort, but that kinda time and effort would be $20-an-hour time and effort...  Anyhoo, here's my first attempt... 'tis not all that great if you ask me. The biggest issue I have here is the lack of detail in the lightest area of the fuselage. That was all wiped out by the paint and the lighting. It definitely needs more work, but the basic effect does comes through somewhat...  The basic gist of what I did here was to combine a number of different layers, most of which were made using the base image, (the photo I took) and changing various properties on several of them to get something that looked like bare metal... not super-shiny polished metal, but barely reflective bare metal. The layers I used which were not based on the photo I took, were based on this image I'd found on the net:  I took this image and made a new layer on the base image, then stretched that layer using 'Free Transform' (under 'Edit' in the top menu) until it covered the entire area of the base image. I then knocked the opacity down to around half (using the opacity slider in the 'Layer' window, lower right in Photoshop, by default) erased the background areas, leaving only the aircraft covered with this new layer. Then it came down to a whole lotta experimentation with many different versions of each layer... much of which I honestly cannot recall. Hopefully I can come up with some fairly simple and straightforward method of doing this... if and when that happens, I'll post it here. Fade to Black...

Here's a typical 'vintage' treatment. Liberty Belle... Geneseo, 2005...  S.Donacik photo Liberty Belle... England, 1944...  Not much done here... using Photoshop: Desaturated the image (Shift+Ctrl+U) Probably messed with the levels some. (Ctrl+L) Removed alotta stuff with the clone and healing tools... people, ropes, etc. Added a tad bit of overall blur. (Top menu - Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur) Did some selective blurring around the edges with the blur tool to make it look like the photo was taken with a cheap box camera of some sort. Added a bit of noise. (Top menu - Filter - Noise - Add Noise (I usually select Gaussian)) And that was probably all I did for this one. Sometimes I'll add a bit of pseudo sepia tone with Color Balance (Ctrl+B), but I don't think I did it here. Fade to Black...

Here's a couple'a little Fokkers... This first one was done by adding some text to a photo...  Photochop of photo by Glenn Alderton For this one, all I did was add some text to the wings. I don't recall exactly how it was done, but it was probably something like this: By the way, when I say 'using ____ tool', that usually means that said tool can be selected from the tool menu in the upper left of the working area in Photoshop.Added the text using the Horizontal Type Tool. (You can select the text properties, including size and color, in the toolbar at the top of the Photoshop window, under the menu... each tool has its own toolbar which appears when the tool is active.) Changed the angles on the text to match the wings. (Top menu - Edit - Transform - Skew and Rotate) The original text was black. I added the white border by making several duplicates of the text layers, (Layer menu, lower left, right-click the layer and select 'Duplicate Layer') changing their color to white, (Horizontal Type Tool toolbar at the top of the screen) and then repositioning the layers until I had a uniform white border. Flattened the image. (Right-click on any layer in the layer window on the lower right, and select 'Flatten Image') Desaturated the image. (Shift+Ctrl+U) Added a bit of noise. (Top menu - Filter - Noise - Add Noise (I usually select Gaussian)) Looks like I also added a tad bit of overall blur after the noise. (Top menu - Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur) I think that was it for this one. Now, to something a bit more complex... I started with this...  Jim Landon photo ...and wound up with this. It's called 'Souvenir Hunting'.  I'm not going to go step by step with this one because I honestly don't recall all of what I did or how I did it. I usually fly by the seat of my pants when I do this stuff and am constantly going back to tweak different things. But you can see all the different images I used to make this 'digital painting' HERE... Fade to Black...

Here's some fun little chops from a long time back... On a modeling forum someone asked the question of where to go in Hawaii to get good deals on kits and such...  On the same forum, there was a discussion about modern day fighters and somebody put forth the idea that the USAF might want to acquire some Eurofighters for whatever reason...  I used to run aircraft ID quizzes on a few forums. One year, for an April Fools joke, I gave 'em this one...  To make that, I started with this:  Added some of this:  And finished off with a bit of this:  I'd like to do some USAAF re-enacting some day, although first I gotta shed some pounds and get some money. So until then, I'll have to settle for this. I call it 'Too Much O2'. Some more goofiness... these first two were done for some fellow forumites on the FSM forums, eons ago...   And I wondered what it would look like if a few local friends had made it to certain positions of power within the government and/or military... This is tentatively titled: 'Oh Sh*t (are we in trouble now)'  Don't even ask...  The goofiness here will not be apparent to anyone on this forum, at least I don't think it will be. This was my little part of a conspiratorial attempt to fool someone on a forum into believing that the NP-3B was used by the US Navy... and it was working, too, until some mental midget who apparently had no sense of humor whatsoever blew the whistle on us, thereby ending our fun. *sniffle*sniffle*  Again, from another forum... someone wanted me to do something creative with a picture of their model.. this is what they got...  Fade to Black...

Here's one I did back when all the changes to 'Diamond Lil' were being made by the late Gary Austin. There was some discussion in a number of places as to what the new nose art was going to be... including some speculation as to how the 'Lil' artwork would look with the new paint. I contacted Gary through WIX to ask if I could mess with one of his photos and he graciously gave me the green light. So I took the old 'Lil' artwork from a photo I had taken, chopped it, 'glued' it, and here's what I came up with...  Photochop of Gary Austin photo Fade to Black...

Here's a couple based on screenshots from a game I used to play... Star Wars Galaxies. This first one is pretty much a straight screenshot with a few areas that were repainted, such as the girl's pony-tail and certain areas on the trees and terrain. I worked quite a bit to get the glowing red sky, and the levels (shadows, etc) were also messed with a good deal. I wanted a backlit semi-silhouette. Titled 'Warrior at Rest'  The original screenshot:  This one was actually a screenshot taken by one of my gaming friends. The sky was totally replaced with a real-world photo... I wish we'd had lightning like that in the game! I also messed with the colors some, and quite heavily with the levels. Titled 'Dathomir Prison'  The original screenshot:  Fade to Black...

Here's a relatively simple one I did that was based on this photo taken at the Air Force Museum (NMUSAF) by 'mustangdriver' over on WIX...  I added the B-17 from a photo of 'Sentimental Journey'... unfortunately I dunno who took that photo. But I wound up with this... Titled 'Last One In'  Fade to Black...

Here's one that was alotta fun for me on a few levels... I started with this photo of AK940, taken by my Dad at Hamilton back in... 1984 or 85 maybe. Maybe even 86, I dunno.  Norb 'Bruno' Donacik photo I replaced the Mustang using another photo of AK940... one that was taken on the other side of the world in 2002! (I forget the name of the photog, apologies)  I took out a buncha stuff, including modern aerials and such, messed with the colors some, and wound up with this... This one started with a photo taken by Charles Ward over on flickr...  Charles Ward photo I replicated the B-24 six times, with six different pieces of nose art. (no, I don't remember what they all were at the moment!) Probably should have used different photos to get some differing perspectives, but what the hey... And I also added a 190 from a photo taken by Andreas Zeitler. Here's the original photo of the 190... a FlugWerk job...  I chopped that photo rather hasty-like... it didn't have to be pretty for reasons that will soon be apparent...  Anyhoo... I wound up with this... Titled 'Lone Bandit'  Fade to Black...

Alrighty... last post in this thread tonight, and perhaps for a while because I haven't got much more along these lines to share! Yet... I saw this photo posted by vlado over on WIX...  I asked vlado if I could mess with his photo, and he said 'sure'. Soooo... after chopping up a period photo of some Forts leaving contrails as well as an anonymous modern shot of a 109... Titled 'The Duel'  And alternate idea I had... I don't like it so much, but others did so here ya go.  Fade to Black...

Okay, I lied... I do have some more... This photo of Lt. James Turnock was posted on flickr by one of his descendants.  The fella who posted it had done some restoration work on the photo, but could not figure out how to fix the light spot around his left ear. So I helped him out a bit...
