Colonel George "Bud" Day, (USAF retired), died this past Saturday at the age of 88. He was a WW-II, Korea and Viet Nam veteran and the most decorated service member since WW-II, including the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, Silver Star, and over 70 other medals. He was a POW in Viet Nam for over 5 years and was awarded the MOH for his unbelievably stubborn resistance to the Vietnamese torture experts. He was the first commander of the "Misty FACs" flying the F-100F Super Sabre. He was shot down over Route Pack I in August 1967, sustaining a broken leg, compound fractures of his arm, blinded in one eye and other injuries from the ejection. He crawled over 5 miles to the DMZ, thru an ARC Light strike, past numerous enemy patrols looking for him and was within sight of the Con Thien US Marine base when he was recaptured. He weighed 97 pounds when repatriated and had permanent, debilitating injuries to his arms, hands and shoulders from continuous torture while a POW. He had obtained a law degree between his service in Korea and Viet Nam and used that knowledge to represent and fight for veteran's rights when the government was so intent on cancelling health care and other things they had earned. I consider Robert Coram's book American Patriot and Colonel Day's autobiography Return With Honor mandatory reading for anyone interested in US military history. May he forever rest in peace with the heavenly Father. As a tribute to Colonel Day and the rest of the Misty FACs, I built this F-100F awhile back. Darwin Darwin

I registered just to comment on this post, you have built a wonderful model and I lust wanted to say thank you for your effort. I got to meet Col. Bud Day a few times, he was such an incredible human being who had the biggest heart. I know he would have loved this model and what you wrote about him in your post. I could tell by reading your post that you think Bud Day is a very special person and so do I his autobiography Return With Honor should be on everyone's reading list just so people realize what can be achieved if you have values and a strong mind set. thats all I have to say, I apologize if this post breaks any rules I just felt the need to say thank you for your effort to let people know about Misty #1

I was fortunate to be volunteering back when the "Misty" Group held their reunion at the AF Musuem and had the pleasure to have some time to chat with the Col. He was in a morotized wheel chair and one of my co-volunteers took a picture.
