One of his weaknesses was the slow speed of the whole which made it vulnerable to enemy fighters.

I know a Mustang (the above statement is very true) Fighter who fought in WW2 over the skies of Europe and he had a buddy of his shot down one of these planes in that configuration and did not realized that the larger plane was actually a bomb - fortunately he shot it down in German Air Space and because it's has two planes on it - his buddy actually got credited for "Two Kills" and became an ACE that day. He already had 3 kills prior to this "target" ...
